THAT WATER RATE.

(To the Editor “Stratford Post.”) Sir, —With reference to “Nemo’s” wail. llis attack on Cr. King, under the circumstances, is most unjustifiable. It is interesting to note the 'true position of the water Account. During the time tho scheme had been installed a sum of £2687 12s 2d had been paid in interest on the first loan of' £B(JOP, and not one penny of this has come, out of the water account. This amount lias been provided by the collection of a special rate struck over the whole Borough, and which is paid by users and non-users of water alike. Perhaps “Nemo” considers this fact ig in the best interest of ratepayers. It is a wonder that the non-users of water have not appealed long ago against this injustice. According to the water account there is a balance lr(including £4OO transferred to general account) of £1382; deduct this amount from £2687, and it is found that the water account is £1305 in ■ debit. A nice argument, indeed, for a reduction in the water rate! When Councillors came to divide on Cr. King’s motion, it was found that opinion on the voting was equally divided, though Cr. Sangster (according to your report of the meeting) had practically stated he was voting against his convictions. Had Cr. Sangster voted according to his convictions a majority of the Council would have declared against a reduction in the rate. In face of this, the Mayor gave his casting vote in favour of the reduction. ft would be interesting to have “Nemo’s” opinion of the‘Mayor’s action.—l am, etc., NEMO No. 2.
