FIRES
(Per Press Association.) Paliiatua, May 19
A disastrous fire occurred in Pahiatua early this morning, whereby tire two-storeyed promises owned and occupied hy Messrs .1. W. Stnrton and ■Co., general storekeepers, wore totally destroyed. The building was the largest of its kind in Pahiatua, and was a tine 1 commodious structure. 1 A valuable stock was carried. The building was insured in the London, Liverpool and (llohe Office for £I6OO, and the fixtures in the same office for £4OO. Risks on the stock were also held in the same office and in the South British. The amount held hy the former ■i5.,£725, hut the amount held hy the latter is not available at present. The total loss is estimated at £4OOO. Wellington, May 20.
Three two-storeyed houses is Russell Terrace, near the Newtown tram terminus, were destroyed by lire today, and two others were damaged. The houses burnt were owned by the Hon. Hamilton Gilmer. The fire was caused by the overturning of a methylated spirit lamp.
