"ALL HOME COMFORTS." (Per Press Association!) Auckland, May 13. Two sergeants and eleven constables raided a Chinese shot in Wakefield Street at eight o'clock last nigblfc, and arrested thirty-eight Chinese on a charge of being found in a common gaming house. Five tables in use in the room were devoted to fan tan, pakapoo, dice, cards, dominoes, and on the floor money was jjpund. Twenty of the arrested were professed Christians, and had been to church. Tug Hung was charged with being the keeper of the house, and two others with assisting him. The police, it is stated, intend to produce evidence to show that the house was run on rather novel lines by a syndicate. For thoso who played, meals, and substantial meals, were provided free. Ir; fact, so good was tiie fare that the house came to be known as the "Northern Club." Players . had to pay a certain amount, it is alleged, for the privilege of playing, and from the winnings in each game from five to ten per cent, went to the "house." "We have evidence," said Sub-Inspec-tor Hendry, "To show that in this way £4O frequently went to the house in one day." A sum of £2 4s was found in the syndicate's commission box last evening and was taken possession of by the police.
