Mr Barnes, the Queensland Treasurer, stated that the removal of the duty on sugar would cause the industry eventualy to die and the hands to become unoccupied. They would thus invite an invasion of nations with whom they were now at peace. Extensive pillaging of .cargo on Sydney wharves continues despite the greatest precautions. The best brands of tobacco, cigarettes, boots, shoes, underwear and liquors receive particular attention. Since the middle of November one firm has lost £SOO of tobacco and another £2OO worth of boots.
The continued drought will have a serious effect on the Northern Riverina lambing, particularly as regards the great mortality amongst owes. A British engineer, inquiring on behalf of the Government on the congested traffic problem, recommends underground railways to connect the city with North-Sydney, Balmain, and the eastern suburbs.
