FOR COURAGE.

LETTER OF COMMENDATION FOi MASTER DODD. At tho Town Hall last night, befor the set business of the* evening com rneuced, a presentation was made t Master John Dodd, of a letter of com mendation from the Royal Human Society. 1 Tho Mayor (Mr. W. P. Kirkwood stated that by the _ courtesy of th Minister it was possible to make th presentation that evening. Mr. Kiri: wood said the- letter of commendatio had been awarded to Dodd for the ver gallant attempt he had made to sav the life of Thelma Edwards, who wo drowned in the lake in Victoria. Part Although the attempt had been unsuc cossful, it was none the less crodii able. There was, said Mr. Kirkwood no better quality than courage, an that quality had certainly been dir played by Dodd. He understood tho Dodd had recently been a pupil of th Stratford School, where ho learn swimming. The parents of the conn try owed a duty to the country i having their children trained for th defence of their country; but ther was no less a duty incumbent on par cuts to allow their children, boys an girls, every opportunity to learn th very, useful art of swimming. Ii Stratford there was an excellent swim ming bath, but he did not think it wai made sufficient use of.

Mr. Kirkwood then read the lette of commendation.

Addressing Dodd, who was on th stage, Mr, Kirkwood said that al though the letter was only a smal niece of parchment, lie hoped Dock would treasure it properly—as bein; a tiling quite beyond monetary value “I hope,” concluded Mr. Kirkwood “that during your manhood you wil display the same courage as you haw displayed during your youth.” On the presentation of the letter hearty applause was accorded to Mas ter Dodd.
