THE FIREMEN’S STRIKE. London, May 5. The Magistrates found the Olympic’s fifty-three firemen guilty, but said that it was inexpedient to punish them, remembering the special circumstances which had arisen out of the Titanic wreck. NAVY DEMANDS. London, May -5. The Daily Chronicle says that statesmen of the lower-deck navy are asking for an all-round increase in pay of 20 per cent. A SIX-HOUR DAY. (Received 6, 9.20 a.in) Brisbane, May 6. Speakers at the Eight Hour dinner declared that the time had arrived to seek a six-hours’ day. SYDNEY WHARF WORKERS. (Received G, 9.20 a.m.) Sydney, May 6. The agreement between the shipping companies and the wharf labourers drawn up at the conference in Jan. uary has not been signed by the president of the Wharf Labourers’ Un-J----on, because it provides for heavy penalties for striking. His action was endorsed by a mass meeting of the men. It is stated that they have no present intention of striking, but refuse to give up their rights.
