The Chronicle is organising a special fund for a memorial for the Titanic's engineers, also for the benefit of the orphans. SMITH'S IGNORANCE. (Received 2, 10.0 a.m.) Washington, May 1. Senator Smith, at the Titanic inquiry, apoligised to Lowe for his reference to the hitter's sobriety. He added that he did not intend to cast any reflection and his use of the word intemperate had been interpreted to refer to his habits instead of his temper. MONEY OF THE DEAD. (Received 2, 10.40 a.m.) Halifax, May 1. , Ten thousand sterling has beer, found on the various bodies recovered from the Titanic. AN INDIGNANT TOWN. (Received 2, 11.40 a.m.) New York, May 1. The town of Ismay, lowa, is taking steps to alter its name in consequence of criticisms addressed to the head of the White Star line in connection with the Titanic inquiry. The inhabitants contemplate renaming the town Butt, Astor, or Strauss.
