FIRES AT THE SCHOOL.
CHAIRMAN SAYS THEY WILL BE
SUPPLIED AT ONCE
OTHER DEFECTS NOTED
The new school building, while admirable in every respect from the aesthetic point of view, does not fulfil all the requirements of either tho scholars or tho teachers.
In a special report to the Stratford District High School Committee, the Headmaster, Air. F. A. Tyrer, writes as follows: —
"On the attached sheet is entered a list of things still undone at this school. It is essentiaKthat some means of warming the rooms should be provided at once, and I should like you to emphatically protest against any further delay in fixing them up. The fixing of blinds on at least four of the windows is also urgent. "You might call up tho Education Board by telephone and endeavour tc" have something done.
"Stoves for the new rooms came to hand, with parts broken, four to s'x weeks ago. As the broken parts were to bo replaced by others made at New Plymouth, all this time should not have elapsed before their completion. Besides, a good deal of preparatorywork (to the walls) is necessary before the stoves can be fixed up in the rooms."
The list includes:—(l) No means of warming the eight rooms of the new school; (2) no hooks fixed (for raising or lowering) on any windows; (3) movable doors" not bolted down; (I) two broken panes of glass—-west wing; (5) no hooks or shelving fixed in any of the offices; (6) no arrangements made, for banging on wall, maps, etc. Mr. Tyrer adds that nothing was being done at the school by the contractor, all the men having loft some time ago. A part of the asphalt already laid down had, he stated, been damaged by the contractor, and should bo repaired. The Chairman of the Stratford School Committee (Mr. P. Skoglund) informed a representative of the "Stratford Post" to-day that the men wow fixing the stoves this morning, and everything possible was being done to have the rooms heated by the, end of this week". Immediate attention will also be given to tho other matters mentioned.
