OBITUARY.

MR. W. BREWER. We regret to have to record the death of Mr William Brewer, of “Waihou,” Waverley,' which occurred at the Belvedere Private Hospital, Wanganui, yesterday morning, says the Patea Press. The end was not altogether unexpected, as Mr Brewer had been in indifferent health for some time past. Recently, however, he had rallied somewhat, and a few days ago was well enough to be taken home, hut on growing worse he returned to the private hospital on Saturday, when in spite of all that medical skill and attention could do, he passed away yesterday. The deceased, who was born at Birmingham in 1845, arrived in the colony with his father when ten years of age. After spending some time on the staff of the Government Survey, Mr Brewer came to Waitotara, where ihe took up land. In 1870 he married a daughter of the late Major Dune, of Wanganui, who survives him. The deceased was a splendid typo of settler, fulfilling his obligations to his King and country in a way that gained for him the respect and admiration of all. As a member of the Wanganui Cavalry he saw active service during the Maori war,' and in later time served on almost every local body in his district. The deceased was a keen sportsman, taking a prominent part in the Egmoht-Wanganui Hunt, as • well as in the Egmont and Waverley Racing Clubs. ' Besides his wife, deceased leaves a family of three sons and three daughters—Mr vS. Brewer, of Stratford; Mr R. Brewer, Hawera; Mr H. Brewer, Waitotara; Mrs Alf. Symes, \. Waverley; Mrs Dr. Simmons, Patea; and Miss Maud Brewer, of “Waihou.” Widespread sympathy is felt throughout the district for Mrs Brewer and family in their bereavement.
