AN ESCAPED PRISONER.
STILL AT LARGE. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, April 26. The prisoner John Lewis, who escaped from custody while at work in the prison brick yards yesterday, is still at liberty. When he scaled the wall surrounding the yard he was fired on by a warder, but the aim was defective, and Lewis managed to get away. It is stated that the prisoner dreaded going hack to Now Plymouth, and that by his conduct since his release by the Prison Board ho had prejudiced his chances of other men who are confined there as “hahituals.” It is further suggested that these men would have visited their displeasure on him, on the grounds that he had prejudiced their chances of liberation. Lewis made his escape with the aid of a plank placed against a corrugated iron wall surrounding the grounds. It is reported that he had been seen in Finlay Terrace after he escaped, hut so far all efforts to recapture him have failed.. Several policemen and probationers, artillerymen, and others are out searching to-day.
