The inquest concerning the .death of Percy Field, the victim of the ho og - ham motor accident, was concluded this afternoon. The jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death as a result of a collision with a motor car driven by J. W. Milner, and that every reasonable precaution had been taken by the driver, no blame being attachable to anyone,, Wellington, April 19. A man named Harry Sandnw was stabbed in a hotel bar tin's evening, receiving superficial wounds in the neck, nose and ear. His assailant escaped. A deputation representing the Rangitikei and West Coast (South ‘lsland) Saw-millers’ Associations waited on the 1 Hon. A, M. Myers, Minister of Rail- ; ways, this afternoon, in respect to the differential railway rates. The I deputation complained that the niill--1 era on the Rotorua line were hotter i, treated in,the way of concessions than were the millers represented by the l‘ deputation; though the latter had to I compete with the former in the same : market. The Minister admitted the ! force of the representations, hut I pointed out that a considerable sum of | money was involved. Masterton, April 20. ! A six-roomed house in Wrigley St., ! owned and occupied by H. H. Wimj'selt, was destroyed by lire early this I morning. Almost all the contents were destroyed. The occupier had a narrow escape through the window. The building was insured for .2250 in the Northern, and in furniture for £IOO in the South British '.lnsurance Companies. Ashburton, April 20. An accident occurred on the Ml. Somers branch line train this morning about 20 miles, from Ashburton, tb(> engine and ten wagons becoming derailed and {earing up the permanent way for a distance of ten chains. The j carriage did not leave the rails, the only damage to rolling stack being a. i broken axle on one truck. Drags j have been despatched from Ashbnr- ! ton to bring the passengis to town.
Napier, April 20. At the inquest held on the body of the lad Charles Alexander Pullar, an absconder from the Weraroa 1 raining Farm, and who hanged himself in the police eel!, the evidence of .Mr Burlinson, the master of the farm, went to show that the decayed was of a peculiar temperament. He had been twice punished at the farm, hut not severely. Ihe jury returned a verdict of suicide, there offing no evidence to show the state of the hoy’s mind. The Encounter on its arrival at Napier yesterday, berthed inside the breakwater. It was the first occasion of a warship tying up at the wharf here. Wellington, April 20. Last evening in the street a man named Herman Henry Hatter, who is better known in boxing and wrestling circles as Harry Sandow, was stabbed h.V another man in the neck, ear and nose after a quarrel. The wounds are not regarded as serious. A man named .John Daniel O’Neil was arrested on the charge of stabbing Hatter and appeared at the Court to-day and was remanded till Wednesday next. Tail)ape, April 20. A railway fireman named A. V, Round was brought into tli hospital today suffering from a serious fracture of the skull. He was fixing a shovel at the back of the tender in the vicinity of the overhead bridge at Mataroa. About 5 a.m. the driver missed him and found him lying at the back end ol the tender, and assumed that he struck the bridge. His condition is critical. It is believed lie belongs to Leestou or Christchurch.
