A DANGEROUS CROSSING.

MINISTER OF EDUCATION TO BE INTERVIEWED. The dangers that exist to the school children by the railway crossing in Fenton Street came up for discussion at the meeting of the Borough Council last night, when Mr. T. H. Penu. the Secretary eof the Stratford District High School Committee, wrote as follows:—"My committee has had in view the growing danger, to the children attending the school, of the railway crossing in Fenton Street. Unfortunately, shunting operations are busiest just a,s the children are going to and returning from the school. It has been suggested that a foot bridge across the river on Orlando Street would enable all children from the south to reach the school without using Fenton Street. There are living south of the river 311 children out of the 738 attending school, so that tiie suggestion affects a good proportion of the school." The Mayor said the letter had been discussed by the Works Committee, who were of the opinion that a much better way of dealing with the matter would be to subway erected. If they built the Orlando Bridge they had no guarantee that the cirildren would use it. They could not compel the children to use it. but on the other hand, if the subway was erected the children would, have to go over it. since the railway people would make ■it an offence to walk over the crossing. They had interviewed the Premier on the matter, and impressed him with the necessity of something being done. The Prime Minister practically said he would do what he could, and in the meanwhile advised them t< see the Minister of Education. Cr. Paget moved that the Mayor and Cr. King be deputed to wait on the Minister, and this was carried.
