MONTHLY MEETING

The usual monthly mooting oi' the Stratford Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. Masters (in the chair), Councillors T. Lawson, J. Boon, N. J. King, 11. K Gorton, secretary of th Stratford Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote informing the Council that a a combined meeting of the Boroug Council, Fire Brigade Committee, an' the Brigade Committee, it was resoh ed that the Brigade apply to the Cour cil for the things enumerated below (1) Stove in Station and removal o partititon in back room. (2) Electri light to be installed in bath room etc. (3) Behind of amount paid fo hire of Town Hall in connection wit! annual ball last year. (I) Hose rac! to be fitted up on Station. His Com mittce were informed by the Counei Committee that Ncs. 1 and 2 of tin above items were passed by the Covin cil some six months ago, and the; wished to know why these matters ha< not been proceeded with. Paget moved that the oversee; report on the cost of completing th' metalling of Juliet Street on its east em side from Fenton Street to Re gan Street. It was only patched a present, and as it was a much-use' street the work was badly required.--Tbe motion was carried.

The letter was receiv ed. A resident in Ariel Street applies for an extension of the water maim to his residence.—Referred to tin "Works Committee to report. Mr J. H. Thompson, secretary o the Stratford Electrical Supply Co. Stratford, wrote re breakages of stree lamps, that he wished to inform tin Council that, if they could prove break ago of street lamps by the Company'; workmen the Company would bo pleas ed to replace same, and that twe lamps admittedly broken by one of tin Company's servants had been immodi atoly replaced. The letter furthe: stated that the Company would be pleased to discuss the question of street lighting between the Compair. and the Council in about six weeks' time, when the new plant would be ii* running order. Another portion of the litter stated that since the Council iiad ieased the Town Hall to private individuals, the cost per unit | would be increased. The Town Clerk said that he had written to the secretary refusing to pay the extra amount' since the Hall had not been leased as stated.—The letter was received. Works Committee. The Works Committee reported as , follows: I (1) Mr W. E. Hills applied for per-

Permission has now boon grunted, MiHills to pay (kl per yard royalty, and repair any damage-. (i!) Water Services. l —Application has been made by Mi 1 . C. (1. Bundle for a water Service to his property in Orlando Street South, this will mean an extension of 11 lit. of 3-inch pipe. Estimated cost £3. MeBSrS Bul'reil Bros, have also made »ii application for B<M'vic& to their property in Olivia Street. This means all extension of two chains of 1-inch pipe, estimated cost £3 15s. We recommend that both these applications be acceded to. (3) The County Council ask permission to remove a quantity of Oal'tli from the. HOi'th-Wost corner ot' Broadway and Romeo Street.—We recommend that request be granted, subject to the work being ddiUJ under I he SupiH'vleidn of the overseer, and at a sufficient width and level to form a footpath. The COuiity Council to pay 3d per yard royalty. (-1) Health Department's Reports— The matter of defective drainage at a private residence has been referred to, and tllO Town Clerk has been instructed tt) take the necessary steps to give effect to the Department's certificates of condemnation with respect to certain premises in Broadway South and Orlando Street.—Adopted Overseer's Report. Mr T. D. Sullivan, the borough overseer, reported as follows: —■ The footpath fronting His Majesty's Theatre lias received one coat of tar and sand, and a second coat will be applied when the first is sufficiently consolidated to receive it. Water tables in Broadway central have been swept daily, and the street cleaned up twice weekly. Weak places in Broadway, north of Pembroke Road to Flint Road, have been picked up and metal put on where required. The footpath is now being repaired. Metal patching'has keen done on Opunake Road. On Cloton Road a quantity of shingle has boon napped, ready for repairing purposes. Various culverts have been cleaned out. The concrete pipes for the Swansea Road culvert have come to hand, and will be placed in position during the coming week. Messrs Chard and Son .have commenced their contract this morning. A burst occurred in the watermain in Broadway South, at its junction with Romeo Street at 11 o'clock on the night of the 15th tilt. I bad the break repaired at 2 o'clock next morning. Two dwellings in Juliet Street have been connected with the Borough sewers. Councillor Paget moved that the overseer's attention be drawn to the "swamp" that was being formed at the corner of Juliet Street and Pembroke Road. The surface water had no means of getting away, and a small pipe was required to carry the water into a near-by creek.—Carried. ' Fire Brigade. Acting under instructions received from last meeting, the' Fire Brigade Committee reports as follows:—"We have had a consultation with the Captain of the Brigade, and having his assurance that a fire will be successfully fought from Broadway, and also having regard for the cost of the work required, viz., £lO7, your committee cannot recommend the Council to accede to the request contained in the petition to lay a 6-inch water main in Miranda Street. Further, this committee- considers that the money, if available, would be better spent in more modern lire fighting appliances." —Adopted. The Band. The combined Town Hall and Band Committees reported re . the question of Band room, as follows : We cannot recommend the Council to accede to the' request of the Band for a piece of the Council's Reserve in Orlando Street, and have advised the Band that in our opinion they should adhere to the original site in Fenton Street West.—Adopted. A Cattle Question. The question of rattle being left in the saleyards over night was referred to by Councillor Paget, who moved that the secretary of the Municipal Association's advice be taken in the matter, provided it was "free gratis," with the view to ascertaining whether the Council could form a by-law so as to prevent this nuisance once and for all. There was no use prosecuting under the Police Offences Act. Abattoir Committee. The Abattoir Committee reported as follows, on the questions referred to them by the Council at its last meeting:— (1) Removal of debris from creek in No. 1 paddock. We have instructed the overseer to have this removed. (2) Fencing: The manager lias been instructed to inform the Council of the number of posts required, and your Committee recommend that alternate prices be obtained for posts of totara or reinforced concrete. (3) Crossing over creek in No. 5 paddock.—Your Committee recommend that the necessary crossing be put in at a cost not to exceed £3. (4) Firewood.—Your Committee ask the permission of the Council to deal with this matter when the necessity for replenishing the supply occurs. (5) Windmill.-—The overseer has been instructed to report in detail on the parts, if any, missing from the windmill, the cost of replacing same, and on the value of the mill when complete in working order.—Adopted. Abattoir Manager's Report. The Abattoir Manager reported that during the month, the following stock were slaughtered:—Sixty-eight cows, 29 heifers, 0 oxen, 252 sheep, 70 lambs, 20 pigs and 9 calves. Thirty-two tripes had been prepared, and one cow's keel cleaned. Fees for the month were £53 7s 3d. Stock had been condemned as follows :—Two

eov.Fi (partially), two heifers (wholly), three (partially), one call' (partially), one pig (partially), one sheep (wholly), one (partially), one lamb (partially). The following stock were slaughtered during the year:—Oows (575, heifers 2'17, enlveS 57, sheep 2851, lambs 010, pigs 373. hive hundred and forty-nine tripos were prepared, and 27 cow-heels. Copestake, the contract sliUlghterman, has been vovy ill, being off work fro'iri tlifi 13th to 30th, and for 15 days he had to employ another man to enable the work to proceed as usual. I should recommend that he bo granted leave of absence, asked for in the enclosed letter.—The leave of absence was granted, and the report adopted. Lighting Committee. 'the Lighting Committee recommended that, provided the Electric Light Company erect a line down Cordelia Street and Warwick Road, the street lights asked for be erected—namely, corner Celia, Street and Cordelia Street, corner Romeo Street and Cordelia Street, corner Cordelia Street and Warwick Road, corner Warwick Road and Borough Boundary. The matter was held over for a month until the conference with the Electric Light Company had eventuated. Cost of Electric Light Negotiations.

Councillor Healy pointed v out that there was already a light at that corner. Councillor Paget pointed out that a re-arrangement of the light was needed. There were other instances of this in the Borough. It was finally left to a committee to deal with.
