INDUSTRIAL UNREST.

RAILWAY RETURNS. (Received 6, 10.30 a.m.) London, April 5. As a result of the strike the receipts on fifty-one railways for the last week in March decreased by £747,000. Compared with the 1911 receipts the quarter ending March decreased £2,233,000. The Times states that the strike has only slightly affected the cotton industry. During the previous prosperity the masters accumulated enormous stocks of coal, enabling most of them to work full time. RAILWAY~ENGINEERS. . (Received. 6, 10.0 a.m.) Perth, April G. The award of the Arbitration Court in connection with the claims of railway mechanical engineers for increased wages does not exceed the rates offered by the Minister for Railways prior to the engineers striking. The claim for preference to unionists is disallowed.
