Primaries held throughout the Mate for the apointment of) Republican delegates to tlie Chicago Convention resulted in an overwhelming majority in Mr 'Taft’s favour although Now York was regarded as a stronghold of Mr Roosevelt. An unsuccessful attempt was made at Rock Island to assassinate Mayor Schriever, bullets being fired through windows of the city hall. A squabble arose recently between the Mayor and the editor, of a local paper. The citizens took sides and the quarrel culminated, in a mob attacking the police station. A general riot broke out and the police tided and killed one man and injured' several others. The mob then attacked the. gaol and endeavoured to release imprisoned rioters and were driven off after charges by the police. The national Guard was ordered out. i The Mayor incurred the enmity, of the, newspapers by attempting to clean the city of undesirables. Two wealthy Englishmen, Covington and Albert, climbing Mt.
