REGARDING CONTRIBUTION

Capetown, March 27. Mr. Silburn’s motion in favour cf a contribution to the British Navy, calculated on the value of South Africa’s sea-borne trade, was rejected by 56 to 35.
Mr Sinartt suggested a contribution of half a million annually. Mr. Smuts stated that the defence hill cost £1,172,000 per annum, being £320,000 more than previously estimated. The time, he advised, was not ripo for arriving at a definite conclusion as to the Union’s contribution to the navy.
