LICENSING ELECTIONS.

iPer Press Association.)

Gisborne, March 12,

Great interest was shown in the Gisborne licensing election. The results were ; —Dewing (liquor) 775, Hepburn (liquor) 723, Somervell (prohibition) Got, Darton (prohibition) 577, McLeod (prohibition) 555. All were members of the old committee. Tne other candidates were: Coleman (lahour) 397, Hall (labour) 336, and Peer (independent) 285. Four outlying booths have yet to come, hut cannot affect the result. Blenheim. March 12.

cry little interest was taken today in the poll for the licensing bench. Out of over GOOD voters, the highest polled by any one candidate was 678. .1 hree of the old committee wore reelected, and two new members. One

old member was defeated. Timaru, March 12,

Ihe Temuka and Waitaki licensing committee elections went against temperance tickets.

Wellington, March 12. Ihe unusual situation of a licensing committee being required in a nolicense electorate was created in Wellington' Suburbs by the changed elec-, toral boundary bringing in two hotels, one at Porirua and another at Pahatanui. In the ordinary course of law these hotels must disappear in July, but the New Zealand Alliance, as the lesult of an agitation to secure the retention contested the election of the licensing committee, winning all the scats i\ itli its nominees. The result was as follows: —W. Cook 521, H. N. McLeod 523, Lily M. Atkinson 50G, C. Cafcnie 492, J. Roith 480. One return to come will not affect the result. The committee will probably hold but one meeting, as licenses lapse on June 30.

Wellington, March 12. Hie result of the election of a licensing committee' for Hutt district was too incomplete to-night to show definitely who were elected, but the probabilities are that Cotton, Ryder, Cuddy, Stevens and Welsh will bo the five leading candidates. A break occurred in the telegraph lines between the Upper and Lower Hutt and no provision had been made to- keep telegraph offices open after 8 o’clock, so returns have yet to come from the Upper Hutt, Wallaccville, Wainuionmtig Muritai, and Taita. Results so far: Cotton 594, Ryder 505, Cuddy 470, Stevens 448, Welsh 432, Short 426, Ewan 422, Waugh; 361. Tho first four were members vof the old committee, the fifth member of, which died recently.

Ha.-UDmiSUt •- <I Nelson,-! Ala^HUifJ-UIDH Tho licensing committee election' Tc-' ' ! - suited in the return of the moderate ticket. In the first three 1 places the no-license party secured one soat, Dunedin, March 12. I ho licensing committee elections in the City and Dunedin South did not attract—argreat deal of attention today. In the City only about 8900 people out of some 29,000 on the roll exercised their vote. Candidates were nominated by the temperance and moderate parties, and the following were elected: AY. Barrett, W- Belcher and T. J. Sullivan (moderate), and G. Calder and A. H. Burton (temperance). In Dunedin South the following Wore elected: Messrs Marlow, Cuttie and Burke (moderate), and Fillis and AVright (temperance.) Christchurch, March 12. For the Christchurch Licensing Committee four temperance ticket candidates were returned and one independent. Eight hundred and seventy informal votes were cast, due to too many names being left. In Riccarton, where the contest was keenest-, owing to the intention of the temperance party to veto cond’tional licenses in connection with racing and trotting meetings and the agricultural show, the moderate party was successful by an overwhelming majority. Eeilding, March 13. In the Oroua Licensing Bench election Mr. J. G. Cobbe and the Rev. G. Bndd, the only No-license candidates, headed the poll. Others elected were Messrs. E. Goodbchere, J. Bruce, -and E. Short.
