Harrowing stories . were told to a special meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board by . a deputation of hack block settlors, from tho King Country yesterday, asking that a doctor and nurses ho supplied. An instance was given where a woman in confinement suffered terribly from want of attention, and whore on occasions assistance of male relatives could only ho obtained. One story was told of-a woman who was carried by menfolk eight miles to the nearest railway point, hero she was placed -on a 'velocipede and conveyed miles for medical aid. Another talo as told of a woman on tho eve of confinement setting out alone to walk eight, miles in the depth of winter -over terribly country to a junction in order to get a conveyance to take her to a place, where she could get medical assistance.. She leit her yoiiiig children at home with her husband. 'Tim woman proceeded some miles until dusk came -on, and then, utterly fagged, she sat down in despair in a wild part of the country, unable to proceed further. Fortunately a horseman happened to come along and found the woman beneath a tree preparing to remain there throughout tho dreary night. Other stories equally appalling wore related, and it was stated that nobody except those living there realised the dreadful experiences of women whom fate ordained to spend their lives in the hack blocks in certain districts -15 miles from a railway and with had roads. The Board is taking into consideration the question of sending district nurses. Hastings, March 7. Tho property known as Bee-croft’s Block, .subdivided into twenty-three business sites, frontages to Quee/n Street, and Karamu, was offered at auction this afternoon. Twelve were sold at £(>o per foot, two at £SO, and one at £52 10s per foot. Wellington, March 7. Tlio steamer Gertie Is proceeding to (ho Chat-hams probably leaving on Saturday, with special gear to endeavour to tow off tlio steamer Ilimitangi, which is aground there. A woman, so far unidentified, was knocked down by a tramcar in Feathorston Street to-night. She had her log broken and her head badly cut, and was taken to the hospital.
