(Per Press Association,) JjTapier, March 8. An extraordinary sequel to the robbery from the corporation strongroom in September last of between £SOO and £6OO is reported. Some time ago a small parcel of the stolen sum was found hidden away amongst old records in the strongroom and this morning two workmen discovered the remainder planted under the corporation office amongst lumber. The police are still without a clue as to the perpetrator of the burglary. By a curious coincidence the . find as made on the day when Danoldson, a youth formerly employed by the Council, and who was acquitted on a charge of stealing, is standing his trial for alleged theft of Rugby Union funds. Palmerston, March 8. The Minister of Railways announced to a deputation yesterday that plans were in preparation for extensive alterations to the Palmerston railway station. The congestion of traffic has been serious during the last five years, and representations were made by the Chamber of Commerce. Mr Millar says the alterations include an island platform in the centre of the railway yards, to be connected with the present platform by overhead bridges, also additional buddings erected at the western end of the present station. Auckland, March 7. At the Te Aroha races to-day, Cuckoo slipped and fell, bringing down Master Lane. The former’s jockey (MoFlynn) sustained serious injury to his back, and Master Lane’s rider (Sceats) had both collarbones broken. A fatal accident occurred in the Taupiri Extended Coal Company’s mine to-day. Some trucks broke away on the incline, and a trucker named G. Bain was jam bed between them and the full skip, which be was attending to. He received terrible injuries, and died almost at once. Deceased come from Aberdeen, Scotland. The Aria correspondent of the “Herald” telegraphed late to-night that an attempt to destroy the mail coach there by fire had failed. *■' Kerosene was springkled on boxes of butter in the coach, but the flames wore extinguished with' buckets of water. An attempt was also made to blow up the local store, owned by the coach proprietor, but this also failed. Details are meagre, but detectives are cnvtr< tigatihg.
