THE TERRITORIALS.
FU ETHER IMPRISONMENTS
(Per Press Association )
Christchurch, March 7
There were two further arrests this morning for failure to pay fines inflicted for breaches of the Defence Act. Edward Henry Edwards, who failed to pay the fine and costs amounting to £2 10s, was taken to Lyttelton to work out the alternative of twenty-one days’ imprisonment, and Walter James Hooper, who failed to pay a similar fine, was taken in charge for a similar term. It is understood that warrants are out for tho arrest of five others, who have broken the Act, and failed to submit to the penalties inflicted by the magistrate. A BATCH OF PROSECUTIONS. Auckland, March 7. At the Police Court to-day cases of 48 young men, charged with having mailed to render personal service under Part 6 of the Defence Act, 1909, yore dealt with. A good many names were not answered to, several having been pronounced medically unfit for service. Most of the accused pleaded guilty and offered no objection to the decision of the court. Fines of £2 and 7s costs were imposed in some cases. Others showed good cause for exemption, and their excuses were given attention to. Others were let off on paying costs. Several stated they would not pay the fine. THE ANNUAL CAMPS;
Tho first batch of Territorials to go into camp left by tho mail train tin's morning. These were the men of C Section, No. 4 Field Ambulance, of whom Captain A. Dillon Carbery, N.Z.M.C., is the commander. The Stratford men, to tho number of ten, and Captain Carbery, will proceed to Wellington the camp being held at Seaton, which is admirably suited for the purposes of a training camp. It was noticeable at the train this morning that the men were very keen on making the trip, and were regarding the eight days’ camp as an eight-day holiday. • The 11th Regiment promises to be a ' great success. A sports programme has been arranged to be held on one of the seven days of training. Among, the events will be an officebearers’ race, with compulsory entry, ilf the General should happen to be in the camp on that day, he would of course have to compete with the others. The wrestling championship of the Taranaki Rifles offers distinction to some youth expert in the gentle A 6°pT eyenjpshould be the relay race, in which eight men from each company will compete for the championship of the regiment. An obstacle race is also on the programme. It seems fairly evident that the men are in for a good time, and though the camp is not due till the 17th of April it is eagerly anticipated by the majority of the momebrs of the local company.
