A STEAMER OVERDUE.
TWENTY-SIX DAYS OUT FROM THE OHATHAMS. SEARCH TO BE MADE. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, Febr ury 26. ■Tin* Chatham Islands Fis-iing Hornpany’s steamer Himitangi is now twenty-six days out from the Chathams, being quite a week overdue. The longest previous trip occupied nineteen days. It has been decided to despatch the steamer Gertie to-morrow night to ascertain if the Himitangi has been reported at the Chathams. The vessel will call at Lyttelton first and will then take a zig-gag course. The Amohura will probably sail on a similar errand later.
TWO PASSENGERS BELIEVED TO BE ON BOARD. Wellington, February 26. The Minister for Marino has given instructions for the Arnokura to proceed direct to the Chathams to search for the Himitangi. She is, however, undergbing repairs and will not get away till Thursday. The Himitangi can rig up canvas in caso her, machinery breaks down, so if the hull is all right she will be able to make port. She is amply provisioned. It is not yet known whether.sho reached the Chathams on the outward voyage. Among the passengers are believed to be a son of Mr W. G. Foster, managing director of the company, and Mr John McLean, formerly of McLean and Archibald, ironmongers, Wellington, but now owner of the fishing station at the Ohathams.
