The' Borough Council will meet on Holiday next to discuss the steam roller question. Members of the RiJip Club yesterday engaged in practice; “Some people seem to be fond of paying costs,” remarked Mr. Nenrich. S ,M.. this morning, as the Clerk of the Court read out 13s costs on a claim for 6s 6d.
A meeting of the Executive Committee of the A. and P. Association will be held in the secretary’s office this evening (Friday) at 7.30 o clock. Wo understand that Messrs. C. and E. Jackson, land agents, of Stratford, have disposed of Mr. Bnblitz’s dairy farm at Ngaire, to Air. J. R. McMillan, at a satisfactory figure. The W.Y.M.I’s tennis team’s fixture against Eltham B was postponed indefinitely, as jEI til am could not arrange for ah team yesterday. Next Thursday- the club are playing the Presbyterian B team.
Paucity of telegraphic news in the present issue is explained by the fact that the telegraph was working stiff at a pdiiit south of Wanganui. A valuable saddle horse belonging to Mr. F., Goochy of the Empire Stables, Stratford, was seriously injured last night by being run into by a motor car in the vicinity of Kali burl Bridge, that it had to be destroyed. ' The horse was being ridden from the direction of Toko. It had its fetlock broken.
“Fd rather pay the amount twice over than be here with the likes of you,” said a judgment debtor to Mr. Thomson at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. In reply to Mr. Thomson’s remark that the debtor was now being impudent, he hastened to apologise, it being evident that it was the searching cross-examination that he could not stand, and meant no personal offence:
The manlier in which tradesmen give credit dame in for a very scathing criticism by Mr. W. G. K. Kenrick, S.M., this morning, at the local Court. The Magistrate said that personally ho strongly favoured limiting the period witljin which it was possible to sue for a debt to six months instcad of six years. In the case of a man getting, a low weekly wage, if he could not pay within six months,he. could not pay vithin six years. There wore few offenders against the borough: byt-larvs brought to book in Court this mpming. - Margaret ]>avis, for failing to register! jiidog,- was convicted without a fine, and similar treatment was- accorded Thomas Gordon, who pleaded guilty to driving without lights. J. A. Thomson, who pleaded guilty to the, offence that Cr. Paget and others, have been ’calling attention to in the Council Chambers, namely, driving loose horses, was mulcted in a fine of os, without costs. A case in which P .James (Mr. Thomson) claimed ..fromniWv! V: 'Hoskiug" (Mr. Anderson) the sum of £2l 4s fid, in connec>tioh with $ stumping contract, occupied the attention of. the Court this morning. The case was, however, after some argument, taken out of Mr. Kciiyick’s hands, the parties having agreed to consent to Mr. K. Dingle as a sort .of arbitrator. Mr. Dingle is to inspect the ground and give his opinion as to wiiethef the work has been donemr not, and the parties agree to abide by his decision. The following officers of the New Zealand Staff Corps and .Royal New Zealand Artillery passed the examination for promotion recently conducted by the British War Office: — Passed for Major: Captains Brown, Duig'an, and Symman (Wellington), Potter and Smythe (Canterbury), passed for Captain: Lieuts. Andrews and Blair (Canterbury), Burgess, King, Melville, Morton (Auckland), Hume .(Wanganui), Dampen and Standisli (New Plymouth), Powles and Bosworth (Palmerston North). —Press Association.
The promoters of the gift sale to be hold in the Old Masonic Hall hereby express their thanks to donors. The response has been most gratifying. The rivalry between the Ladies’ .Guild and the “d amblers” (the young men organisers of the jumble stall) is still keen. From present appearances the difference in the amount raised will not be great. Prizes are being selected for the competitions, for which an all-round entrance foe of Gd is being made. The sale will be opened at 3 pm. prompt on Tuesday, and a hearty invitation is given to all. Goods wdl be received at ,thc hall on Monday afternoon and evening, and Tuesday morning. Jakes, claim for IGs, and costs os; F. P Uni a eke (Mr. Spence) v. Elina Chard and A. J. Chard, claim £l3 19s Gd, and costs £1 11s Gd; J. Avrcy, Ltd. (all'. Vi right) v. S. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, befdre -Mr. W. G. K. Kenriek, three local residents who ought to hare known hotter, pleaded guilty to hemg 1 ouud on licensed premises dunug prohibited hours. Air. Spence, (for accused) stated that they we>e merely in the yard qf the liotel, and had not intended obtaining liquor. For the police, Sergeant McNeely said that one of the accused was actually knocking at tlio back door, and another had frankly admitted to him afterwards that lie had been there for the purpose, of obtaining a drink if possible. At the time they were caught on the promises, the men said they were trying to get a room to settle some private business. This was a lame excuse, because they bad a room in the stables, which could have served their purpose. The Magistrate indicted a tine of os, and 7s costs in each ease, since defendants were first offenders.
“There is no imprisonment for failing to pay a debt: The imprisonment is for contempt of Court, in that, having the money, the judgment debtor has failed to comply with the order.” —Mr. W. G. K. Kenrick, S.M., at the Court this morning. The first mounted parade of the D Squadron of the 2nd Regiment of the Wellington and West Coast Mounted Hi lies was held yesterday afternoon, there being a good muster of the men, and some good work put in. Captain Cardalo took the parade, Captain Hcnty, squadron commander, was present. The cricket match Married v. Single, which was to have been played on the Show Ground yesterday, did not eventuate, but a very enjoyable scratch game was played. To-morrow the Public Works'Hcpartnient will he engaged in a match agains't the. Pohokura Club, on the same ground, the latter team being the challengers.
