LATE LOCALS.

Mr. W. Devenish, Collector of Customs at Greymouth, is at present on a visit to Stratford. He is staying with Mr. T. C. Fookes.

Barton Bros’ Circus, which claims to be “the greatest Waggon Show on Earth,” is to visit Stratford on 9th March.

The Court list for to-morrow’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court includes 42 civil cases (5 defended), 5 judgment summonses, 8 informations against persons found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, and 3 breaches of the borough by-laws. A Press Association message from New Plymouth states that Mr. Weger, a member of a firm of manufacturers of drilling plant, informs the “Taranaki Herald” that his firm intends erecting Jarge works . in.- New. . Plymouth for the purpose of supplying plants, of which he is convinced a large number will soon lie runniUg, 1 . since the oilfield is attracting attention in America and elsewhere. He is reporting on the property for an Auckland syndicate. At 2.30 this afternoon some two hundred voters''had taken the trouble to record their opinion on the electric light proposal. This represents perhaps a quarter of those qualified to vote. There has been little excitement op the question, thopgh the opponents of the -schefne have been actively engaged in endeavouring “to douse the glim.” It is recorded that 'one gentleman wHans known to have very strong feelings on the question, cast his vote in the opposite direction to which he had. intended, owing to confusion over the voting paner. Confusion with the licensing voting paper may have, been the cause of this,\ and other recorded mistakes, though if; is stated that the issue on the voting paper was put far from clearly'!
