WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) We are having another spell of unsettled, showery weather, still, not bad enough yet to spoil the roads, which are at present very good. Mr. Newton King came in last Saturday from Stratford in his motorcar to attend the sale at nis yards here, that being the first car to ci css the saddle this summer.
There was a. good yarding at Newton King’s sale, and prices were fairly good, though the opinion there was Tat the meat workers’ strike in Wellington made sales easier than would otherwise have been the case. Mr. D. B. Howard, of Kohnratnhi. has had a bread cart built specially for the bad roads and .mud. It is the kind of delivery cart that would raise a smile from town dwellers because of its strength and weight, hut .the ex-perience-of yeans is behind this purchase. Mr. Morrison, of Toko, is the builder of .the cart. Mr. J. Fisher, of Whanga Road, mot with a painful accident last week here. Ho was thrown from his horse, injuring his head .and jaw. Assistance was rendered, and the head bandaged, and no serious result is anticipated. Mr. R. E. .Shewry, of Hurimoa.na, has had to go to Stratford with a poisoned hand and arm—nearly 50 miles to a doctor from a populous district like onus, is surely not as it should be.
Mr. S. Morrison, blacksmith, lias removed his premises to the corner of Whangs. Road. The new post office is to be erected on the section lately occunied by Mr. Morrison. Mr. S. Bishara has nearly comnb'ted the building of ,a new shop pn Whanga Road, where.: heC purposes shortly to open an up-to-ditto newsagent’s and stationer’s shop. Masters ,M. and .f. Calgher have returned from New Plymouth,. where they have been under the doctor’s care for a few days. I hear that Messrs. 1 Court; and Cottier, the well-known ' storekeepers, are shortly to add a new branch to their business in the 'shape of an up-to-date dressmaking and "millinery department. The local school picnic is to he held nothin the next month, on some date that does not clash with any other sports or entertainment. A large and representative meeting was held last Saturday evening to arrange a grand sports meeting for Raster Monday, to be called the Whanga-Kolmratahi sports. The intention is to hold the sports in a’central position, say, midway between Whanga and Kohuratahi, and hy amalgamation to bring into life ia real live and active sports club. There if ample room here, plenty of people, and more than average talent in the matter of athletic sports. Anyway, a very strong committee has been formed. and success is a certainty. Mr. McMeekin is acting .as secretary of tho general committee It is estimated that fully 300 people rolled up to witness the cricket match, Public Works v. AVhanga. It was a perfect day, but not' a perfect wicket, and a fine sporting spirit prevailed, even' player in turn getting his share of lively encouragement. The end of’the. day saw.t'hej Public Works team victorious ;byril()2 runs, A return match is to. be played in about three weeks’ time.
The f foundations are being .put in for the new? hank, here, andthh filling ed .’ A start was made yesterday with the new wing of the' public'school here.
