FIRE STARTED AT MILITARY•. • Jfi'yj :' ;^ i ■' 1 , ■. . INFLAMMATORY PLACARDS. (Per Press Association.) ; • 1 ■; 'l; V y n ■ '••• . t ' Christchurqh, 'Februai'y 5. The authorities, at the Christchurch district military, headquarters . office, in Montreal street, were, considerably annoyed this morning to find'that\the fences surrounding the office and King Edward Barracks '"had rbh&n jbihcfifded with copies of a printed manifesto urging all and sundry to oppose conscription, and with a number of small square “stickers,” bearing such mottoes as “Don’t be a conscript; be a man!” “Men, not- pimps, ’’ and /‘The military strike- - is'- now on.” The stickers bore no imprint, and were evidently made with. a rubber stamp or a very amateurish printing press, but a more elaborate manifesto, in addition to bearing the imprint of a local printing firm, bore the signatures of nine persons. In addition to these demonstrations of disapproval of the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act, a mild attempt at incendiarism was made at the barracks last night. Shortly after 10 o’clock the fire brigade was called out, and the outbreak was speedily checked. An examination made this morning by a reporter showed that a small fire had been started in an alleyway between the street fence of the barracks and one of the old wooden orderly room buildings. The fire [had been so quickly quelled that it had barely scorced the paint at the bottom of the weatherboards'. FIRE BR-IGADESMAN FINED. Hamilton, February 5. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Sydney Beaven was charged with not attending parades in the terms embodied in the Defence Act. Defendant is a\ member of the Municipal Fire Brigade, and stated that ho considered that ho served his country sufficiently. Lieut. Burgess said there was a number of similar cases, and the result' of the present case was awaited by other defaulters. No member of local institutions were exempt under the Act, although he did all he could to meet them. Mr Loughnan, the S.M., said the Act had to bo carried out. He would impose a substantial penalty, as ho regarded defendant’s excuse as fictious and inadequate. Being a member of a fire brigade did not exempt him. Defendant was fined £2 and ,7s costs, but in any future cases the magistrate said ho would inflict a severe penalty. CADETS FOR AUSTRALIA. Wellington, February 5.
