The Supreme Court was opened today, only four criminal cases being set down. James Fitzgerald, on a charge of assault and robbery at Shannon, was found guilty and given twelve months’ probation on condition that he did not touch liquor 01 visit hotels for twelve months.

Wellington, February 5,

At the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr Justice Chapman, a young man, named Goo. Alfred Tracey, who had pleaded guilty to theft, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upom, but would have to make compensation for property stolen and pay £5 towards the cost of the prosecution.

Frederick William Green, formerly manager and secretary of the Welling Working Men’s Club, pleaded not guilty to the theft of £173 ,19s 9d from the funds of the institution. Evidence for the Crown and for the defence was given and counsel addressed the court. His Honor will sum up in the morning. Wellington, February 6.

At the Supreme .'Court Granville Hunt was sentenced to eighteen and twelve months’ imprisonment on two charges of forgery and uttering, the sentences to be concurrent.

NOVEL MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE

Gisborne, February 5

Two cases arising out of the death of a man named Klein at Pt. Awanui were heard at the latter, place to-day before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., when F. G. Allen, licensee of the Sea View Hotel, near Pt. Awanui, was charged with manslaughter in that he supplied excessive quantities of liquor to Klein, who was under his care in a helpless condition. The Magistrate considering there was insufficient evidence, this charge was dismissed, but for permitting drunkenness on his premises, Allen was fined £ls and had his license endorsed. i .
