BIG CRICKET.

VICTORIANS SCORE 195 AND

FOLLOW ON

FIVE FOR 132

(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.)

Melbourne, February 5. The weather was delightful and cool, the change being much appreciated. The attendance was small and the wicket perfect. Armstrong and McDonald continued to tire bowling of Barnes and Hitch. In Hitch’s second over, McDonald played on.—-7—6—90. Brown succeeded, and with three fine cuts off Hitch brought the century up in 113 minutes. Armstrong, who was cautious, narrowly escaped a similar fate to McDonald. Brown was executing some beautiful off strokes at the expense of Hitch. At 114, Barnes retired temporarly, owing to illness, and Iremonger bowled. Brown scored 23 while Armstrong was making five, then for twenty minutes Armstrong received most of the bowling and scored steadily. At 136, Douglas relieved Hitch and Hearno replaced Iremonger. Armstrong pulled Heavne for four, bringing 150 up in 157 minutes. Brown was dismissed in failing to pull a long hop from Hearne—B—3s—ls6. He had batted stylishly for 65 miilutes, and hit two fourers.

Carkeek (4) and Armstrong (32) played out time to luncheon, when the Bcoro was eight for 161.. On resumption Armstrong batted brightly, but Carkeek was easily caught shortly after behind the stumps, and the innings closed for 195. Matthews was absent owing to the death of his son. Armstrong batted for 110 minutes, and hit four fourers. The innings occupied 204 minutes.

Victoria had to follow on. Baring and Seitz faced Douglas and Iremonger.- The first ball proved fatal to Baring—l—o—o. Smith, who cut and drove well, played forward and was clean bowled—2 —12—28. Scott was run out without scoring—3—o—2B. At the tea adjournment the score was three for 33. Seitz, who batted attractively, was 21 and .McKenzie nil. On resuming, McKenzie made some nice back-cutting strokes, and fifty occupied 64 minutes. When Seitz was 27 ho gave a chance of catching at the wicket off Iremonger. Hitch relieved Douglas, whose averige was two wickets for 26, and when Seitz was 30, Smith made a loud, uniuccessful appeal for a catch at short Top off Hitch. The spectators did aot approve of the appeal. Scoring was slow, and at 71 Woolley relieved Iremonger, and Seitz was lismissed first ball, being caught at third man by Vine, who was fielding substitute. He had batted eighty minutes and hit four fourers. Brown was missed by Smith off Hitch’s third ball, and was thereafter uncomfortable against Hitch, who yorked him—s—l4—9B. Armstrong beautifully drove Woolley to the off. bringing up the century in 123 minutes. McKenzie played attractive, graceful, forceful cric.ket, cutting and clrivino*. 1 ** • , At 122, Iremonger relieved Hitch, whose average was one for 38, and Hearne replaced Woolley, who had taken one wicket for , 12..
