FINE ART SALE.

PICTURES BY MR. J. D. PERRETT

Mi'. 1 J. I). Perrett, the Avell-known New Zealand artist, is holding an exhibition of paintings in oil, water, and pastel at Mr. Newton King’s auction mart, it being the intention to dispose of them by auction on Saturday, February 10th. The pictures, some fifty-four in' number, include a number of charming views of New Zealand scenery. In viewing them one cannot but think that Stratford is fortunate, in being the centre selected by the artist, for the paintings are all of them of high artistic merit, and many are perfect gems of subtle shades or" vivid colouring. Pride of place should be given to a magnificent view in oils of “Evening, North Fiord, Lake Te Anau.” A rich purple tint is the predominant colour, relieved in pleasing contrast by mists of grey and the reflections from the Mt. Pembroke glacier. The beauty of the effects obtained by the artist is all the more remarkable, since he was unfortunate enough to have lost in the wreck of the U.S.S. Waikare, the original sketch, and the work was done solely from the aid of pencil notes. Some time ago a similar painting of the same scene was exhibited in the Old Country, and Mr. Perrett received some very flattering notices of the work, one paper remarking that the reproduction of the purple colouring and the mountains reflected in the shimmering water of the lake showed that Mr. Perrett was an artist of colour perception of the highest merit. Near by is a “Swamp Sunset,” a bold and striking piece of work depicting a cloud effect that is sometimes seen locally when bush fires are prevalent. “Evening, Mount Cook.” is a view of the majestic mountain taken from behind the Hermitage. Pastels showing a moonlight effect on Rangitoto Channel, and an autumnal sunset reveal the artist’s versatility, the former being painted with a quiet effect, while the latter is a strong piece of bold colouring. In our limited space it is impossible to mention in detail any but the more striking features of this splendid collection. In addition to his own works Mr Perrett is disposing of some pictures by well known artists that have come into his possession. The pictures will be on view all this week, and it is to be hoped that all lovers of art will inspect Mr. Perrctt’s collection.
