(Per Press Issociation.) Wellington, January 25. Tlie University Senate to-day, on the motion of Professor Salmond, decided (that before action is taken under the motion appointing an annual conference of representatives of the professorial hoards, legal advice he taken as to the validity of the motion. On the motion of Mr Hoghen, M.A., it was decided that before presenting himself for the degree of Doctor of Literature, Doctor of Science, or Doctor of Law, the candidate must .have been .admitted to the degree of ‘Master of Arts, or Master of Law as the case may be. Mr James Allen seconded the motion.

Professor Salmond thought the matter should ho kept bofe-p 4 ' - c —iblic, though he did not think the Senate would he successful. There was no need for -the bogey of sectarianism to militate against the proposal. The chancellor declared against the motion, which was contrary to the non-sectarianism of the education system of the Dominion. It was only whore there existed 'a State Church that dogroe in divinity were granted by State universities. After further debate, the motion was carried by 14 votes to 10.
