A STRENUOUS DEBATE

Wellington, January 23. A' strenuous debate was occasioned it the meeting of the Senate to-day >y the motion of My. James Allen to she effect that the Senate arrange an innual conference/ of representatives if the professorial boards of the afiliatcd institutions, to be held in lucid and, Wellington, Christchurch, md Duemlin, ,at times to bo fixed by .he Senate. / The mover said all the motion limed at/was making the consnlta,:ions of the Senate until the professors Permanent. One result would be the facilitating of a great amount of the Mailed work the Senate had to deal .vitii. \
Professor J. MacMillan Brown said die proposal would result in inconveniences, and the awkwardness and ilogical aspects of work under the proposal would be hugely increased. Mr. Vilen’s proposal ignored the large constituency of graduates and the governing bodies. He moved an amendnent to the effect that questions relating to the definition of subjects or examinations or curriculum be referred to members of the college staffs, with the view that where conflict ocnirred a conference of the said teachirs might be arranged, and that all piestions relating to the constitution, degrees, etc., where opinion : s equally divided in the Senate, be referred to a referendum of the members of the staffs, governing bodies, vnd convocations of the colleges. The discussion is proceeding.
