AWARDS BY THE ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY.

Christchurch, January 22

A meeting of the court of directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand was hold to-day. The action of the secretary in granting the application for twelve life buoys for Timaru was confirmed. When tlio case of Alfred William Gyles’ (23 years of age) claim for recognition for rescuing Norman Avisou from drowning at, Lower Hutt (Wellington), on March Btb, 1911, came up for consideration, Mr R. C Bishop said that there had previously been many meritorious cases that it had beon impossible to recognise owing to the long period that had elapsed, and it would be impossible, under* the rules, to recognise the present case. It was decided that the claim could not be recognised. In the case of J. Faulkner (16 years), who rescued C. J. Brown (40 years) from drowning at Auckland on October 12, 1911, it was decided that owing to special gallantry in connection with tho rescue to grant a bronze medal.

In tho case of Daniel Johnson (28 years of age), who attempted to rescue William Moffatt (35 years) from drowning at Gamarang (Java) on April 22, 1911, it was decided to refer the case to the Victorian Society to see if it was prepared to recognise tho case.

In regard to John Dodd (14 years), who attempted to rescue Thelma Edwards (3J years) from drowning at Stratford on December 6, 1911, it was decided to refer the letter back for further evidence.

In the case of George Beal Dawson (23 years), who rescued Horace Ryan (12 years) from drowning at Oamaru on November 16, 1911, it was decided

to grant a letter of commendation. In the case of Thomas Kennedy (25 years), who rescued Wilfred Cecil Kennedy (4 years) from drowning at the Ashburton crossing on Juno 24, 1911, it was decided to grant a framed certificate.

Jas. Stephen Smith (15 years), for rescuing Guy Leslie Pinckney (8 years) from drowning at Wellington on December 14, 1911, was also granted a letter of commendation.
