In connection with the Wakatere tragedy, where one lad shot another in. the temple, the .depositions of the victim, 1 who now lies in a precarious condition, in the hospital, ,were; taken. Rowlands stated to the police that the shooting was quite accidental. Waiding was not in any way to blame. The latter was brought before the Police Court charged with doing actual bodily harm, and was remanded on bail. Gisborne, January 9. At the inquest to-day on the body of the young man, John William Wood, 28 years of age, found sitting dead m an outbuilding, the medical evidence was to the effect that death was duo to inflamed condition of deceased’s left lung, due to pneumonia, and accelerated by the diseased condition of the internal organs. There were also evidences of extreme alcoholic habits. It was stated that deceased was to have started work that morning, out after having a drink he returned to where he was staying, expressing i.he determination to lay down. A verdict was returned according to the medical evidence. Hokitika, January 9. A yoijng man named Fred Thompson, aged twenty years, met with a serious accident to-day at the Westland Sawmilling Company’s mill at Flowery Creek. It appears that he was crushed between the buffers of two timber trucks, and ho was injured internally, but the extent is not yet ascertainable. The unfortunate man was brought into Hokitika for medical attention, where he is progressing satisfactorily. Dunedin, January .). A six-year-old boy, named McCauley, mot with a serious accident at South Dunedin to-day. Ho was swinging behind a spring cart, which was going at such a pace that he was swung oil his feet, anti one leg got between the spokes of a wheel, and was badly broken. The lad was taken to the hospital ,and it is fearod that the limb must be amputated.
