(Per Press Association.) , Thames, January 7.* A serious shooting accident occurred on the steamer Wakaterc. One of the saloon boys, Robert Rowlands, of Auckland," asked another lad, Arthur Waffling, for a clothes brush. Walding opened one of the drawers in the mate’s cabin to get a brush, and found a revolver. He began fooling with it, and, not knowning it was loaded, pointed it at Rowlands’ head, and nulled the trigger., Rowlands is in die hospital in a critical condition, md Waffling is nearly distracted with ipief. Thomas Peddie, aged 28 years, ffieepfarmor of Colyton, near Ffilding, met his death on Saturday night by jumping from the window of an upstairs room at a boardinghouse in Molesworth Street, kept by Miss Curtis. Deceased arrived in town with his mother and sister on Saturday evening, December -30lh, and as he appeared strange in his manner an attendant was engaged to look after him md sent to the railway station for luggage. In the meantime deceased eluded his mother and sister, ran up the stairs, and raising the window, leapt out. Death was instantaneous. Deceased’s father, who died three vears ago, was for many years a hotelkeeper at Napier. Auckland, January-8. Alfred Henry Pritchard, single, 29, a labourer, was drowned at Hellyer’s Crock, near Birkdale, on Friday, owing to -the capsize of a punt, .in which he and William Hare were rawing.
