(Per Press Association.) Auckland, January 2. The mystery attaching to the death by drowning of an elderly man named James Kerr whoso body was found floating near the Queen street wharf on Saturday, was investigated but not solved at tiio inquest held this morning. The cause of death was presumably drowning, and a verdict to that effect was found, the jury adding that there was nothing to snow how the body got into tne water. At the inquest on Mrs Alary MacDonald who died yesterday as a result of injuries received on Boxing .Day from falling off the Halswell coach, a passenger by the same coach stated that in his opinion the steps were dangerous, as the bottom step was set at an angle and the bottom stcpAvas broken. An old person or one not accustomed to it, would be liable to fall. The coroner stated that he had received a letter alleging that deceased’s family had beaten her. This was indignantly denied by members of deceased’s family. A verdict of death from injuries received in a fall from a coach was returned. Inquiries at the hospital to-day elicited the fact that the victims of the ccoach accident at Cass, are showing signs of improvement, though it will probably be a day or two before those still in the hospital will be able to leave it. Their early recovery is regarded as extremely likely. Timaru, January 2.
