THE SEVENTH ROUND. (Per Press Association.) Napier, January 2. In the seventh round of the chess championship, Gyles resigned to James on the 35th move. Sainshury secured an advantage over Connell on the 30th move, and the latter resigned on the 40th, finding the odds too heavy to struggle against. Hicks heat Grierson on the 39th move. Hicks threatened to mate, which Grierson saved by sacrificing his queen, after which lie resigned. Jourdain beat Mason, mating him on both moves, after a sterling game. Kelling and Severne drew. Jourdain’s win over Mason places the former in a winning position.
