The visitors won tne toss and elected to bat, but made a bad start oh a good Avicket. The innings terminated for 112 runs. South Canterbury collapsed before Southland’s attack,, being all out, in .the second innings for 54. Southland had no dimcuity in knocking up the 40 odd runs required, and won easily by ten wickets, thus retaining the cup. PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. ■ i ‘ Christchurch, December 27. The Plunket Shield match, Canterbury v. Otago, commenced at Lancaster Park on Saturday in line weather, but on a slow wicket. Otago won the toss and batted, making 302 for the innings. Heavy rain all day on Monday left the ground very heavy, and play could not be resumed until 2 o’clock to-day. The wicket was exceedingly difficult, and the remaining eight Otago wickets only added 90. Canterbury lost four wickets for 30, but a very determined stand by Carlton and Lusk doubled the score and left Canterbury still with a fighting chance. WELLINGTON V. HAWKE’S BAY. Wellington, December 27. The representative cricket match, Wellington v. Hawke’s Bay, commenced on Saturday in good weather, and the wicket was in good condition, but tho attendance of the public was not large. Hawke’s Bay won the toss and sent Wellington to the field. The innings netted 238 runs. Wellington’s first innings closed for 175. •HAWKE’S BAY V. MANAWATU. Palmerston, December 27. Tho Hawke’s Bay reps, commenced a match against Munawatu yesterday. The visitors batted first and scored 115, the principal scorers being Board 12, Hindmarsh 18, Blamires 16, Stev~ens 13, Ashcroft 20. Manawatu replied with 99—Travena 30, Greer 14, and • Bennett 13. Hawke’s Pay, In their second innings, have lost four wickets for 13. The match continues to-morrow.
