In a collision net ween the ferry boats .fierce and fiirriballi, twenty feet of the bulwarks of the latter were carried away. One passenger was injured, not seriously. iOwing to coastal wharf labourers refusing to work overtime on Saturday -at award racc<., several vessels were forced to return portion of their cargo to the ports of embarkation. The men demanded two and threepence. The award states one and tenpence. As a result of careful usage the water supply has improved, and is expected to be normal to-morrow. Sergeant McDonnell was attempting to arrest a foreigner at Warren, when-the hitter drew a revolver and shot McDonnell through the heart. Death was instantaneous. The foreigner was subsequently arrested. The barque Stromsbo, bound from Newcastle to Peru, has returned to Sydney 7 badly damaged. She met terrific weather, and all her sails were blown away. Practically the whole of. the deck fittings wore washed overboard. She was forced to put back for repairs. The supposed small-pox case at Mindaroo has been diagnosed as chicken-pox. The barquentine Oberon was towed to Newcastle. The sickness aboard was found to bo beri-beri. The sufferers were removed to the hospital, j, i , Melbourne, December 26. A return giving account docks kept by householders shows larger incomes and relatively smaller families. The books returned are not sufficiently numerous to be of much value. Adelaide, December 27. In the Assembly the Premier announced that the Government had decided upon a definite step to enforce the rights of the House and the Assembly 7. He moved the adjournment till January 3rd, to enable the Government to confer fully with the Governor. The motion was carried.
Brisbane, December 27. George Cooper, wharf labourer, shot his wife seriously, and then committed suicide.
Francis Nebbell and John Jackson, school teachers, were drowned at Calounda, near Gyrapie, in attempting to rescue a woman bather. The latter was saved by a third man. In a fire "at the smelt’ng works at Chillagoe, the main building and also an electric travelling overhead crane, were severely burnt. The damage is £7OOO. Work will probably be delayed for three months.
