HAGERTY V. MAXWELL
Regarding the match between Hegariiy (Australasian light-weight jnampion)and A. C. Max well (JNew Zealand champion) at Christchurch on Thursday last the “Press’ says:— The contest was for six three-minute rounds. Tne lirst round produced a
/cry clever exhibition. Hagerty was /cry good with his smother. Maxwell showed that ho had a good light swing, and lie got in a straight left, which elicited a lot of applause. The second round was keenly fought. Hagerty was the cleverer, but showed a disposition to hold in clinches. The third round was Hagerty’s, wild kept on the attack. Maxwell appeared to be weakening, while Hagerty was breathing hard. The fourth round opened merrily, Hagerty rushing the attack. A succession of clinches followed, in which Maxwell held his own. The fifth round was undeniably Hagerty’s. In the last round Maxwell made a . great rally, and looked like snatching victory, it was one of Hie most exciting finishes ever seen here. - Hagerty came at the finish, but sought the shelter of clinches whenever he could. The referee entered the ring, and pulled the lads apart. It was touch and go for a knock-out for either man, and when the gong went it relieved a high tension situation. The award in favour of Hagerty was received with great cheering and a few groans. It is probable that Hagerty and Maxwell will meet again in T imam on November 22nd.
Maxwell arrived in Stratford on Saturday night for the purpose of spending a few days at his home at Toko. He states that Hogarty is a lighter of the first class, and he expresses himself as quite satisfied with the referee's decision.
