BIG TIMBER CARGO.

The big cargo steamer Stratligawy 4398 tons, which arrived a Welling ton yesterday, from Gray’s Harbour, Washington State, U.S.A., had ;

huge cargo of Oregon pine and redwood, which piled 12f. above hc-i decks fore and aft, says the “Times.” Vessels frequently leave the Pacificslope with timber cargoes stacked up in a similar manner, but New Zealand shipping laws prohibit, the carrying of large deck loads. The vessel occupied sixteen clays in loading the 3,600,000 ft. of timber. It was intended to stack her deck load to a height of 18ft, but the time occupied in shipping the full amount would have caused the vessel to miss a high-tido. which might have detained her inside the bar for another week. The Strathgarry belongs to the famous “Strath” licet of thirty-three steamers owned by Burrell and Sons, of Glasgow. She is four years old, and a splendid type of cargo carrier. When the vessel left Cardiff some months ago she had a full crew of Arab firemen and sailors. All except half-a-dozen were paid off at Java, and Europeans were engaged instead. Gray’s Harbour which is between Puget Sound anc •San Francisco, is described by the officers as a busy timber centre.
