There is much concern in sports and athletic circles at tho possibility of serious interference, both with summer and winter games, by compulsory military training, on account of the half-day and whole day parades being fixed for statutory half-holidays, the effect being to debar all young men eligible for military training from participating in the sport with which they are identified. It is locally held that military training will increase the difficulties of clubs and prove detrimental to all sport, especially summer pastimes. ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. Christchurch, August 3. Arrangements are being made for a further supply of Siberian dogs for the British Antarctic expedition, and they arc expected to arrive at Lyttelton about the end of October. They will, with tho Indian mules which will ho shipped shortly from Calcutta, bo convoyed to Captain Scott’s base by the Terra Nova, which will leave Lyttelton about the end of the year. THE GRASS GRUB. Christchurch, August 3. A conference of farmers held at Horrellvillo to-day discussed tho grass grub. It was stated that the profits of farmers had boon decreased by *SO per cent, as a result of the ravages of tho grub. Tho only suggestion as to how to cope with the grub that was considered as likely to bo of any use, was that small birds should ho allowed a free hand for a year or two. TARDY TERRITORIALS. Wellington, August 3. William Cornish, the youth who served twenty-one days’ imprisonment for failing to register as’ a Territorial, was released from gaol this morning. Tho intended demonstration from the prison gate did not eventuate. He will be presented at tho Socialists’ Hall to-morrow evening with two medals, one from tho Christchurch AnnMilitary League, and another fro n the Runanga Miners’ Union.
