Fifth Of Force Shot Down
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, October 31. The Luftwaffe today made its biggest daylight effort against Britain for two years. Canterbury was the main objective. Fifty raiders were employed and nine were shot down. At least 10 were killed in the Canterbury raid, which was made about dusk and lasted half an hour. The raiders swept down from cloud cover in four waves, then hedge-hopped to the coast. They machine-gunned two trains and a number of villages were bombed and machine-gunned. Four night raiders were shot down elsewhere, making 13 for the day. AXIS VESSEL HIT Air Attack Near Zeebrugge (8.0.W.) RUGBY, October 31. Spitfires attacked a goods train near Ostend and an enemy supply ship near Zeebrugge today, states the Air Ministry. Machine-gun fire scored hits all over the vessel. Later in the day Mosquitoes attacked an airfield and factory in Holland, also ships off the coast. One Mosquito is missing.
