FRENCH WORKERS STRIKE
WOMEN DEMONSTRATE (Rec. 6.30 pun.) LONDON, October 31. Anti-German demonstrations have again broken out in many industrial centres in Unoccupied France. Vichy is reported to have obtained new extension times for the dispatch of workmen to Germany. This is believed to be some time in January. Meanwhile, workers who have volunteered to go to Germany have been ordered to report for medical examination. The order has provoked partial strikes in the Annecy region and a general strike has broken out at four places in the Arne Valley, also in Haute Savoie, where hardly a factory is at present working. The womenfolk of the men ordered to report for medical examination massed outside the depots,
frustrating police efforts to permit the doctors to carry out their task. A detachment of German mechanized troops from Occupied France entered Haute Savoie. The Germans are reported to have arrested three strike ringleaders.
The Vichy police on Wednesday raided 50 hotels, 350 houses and 2350 flats and took in custody several occupants.
Under a new German decree persons entering and leaving Norway without permits are liable to the death penalty. A confidential letter being circulated among Germans living in Sweden warns tixem not to provoke incidents or demonstrations against themselves, says The Daily Telegraph’s Stockholm correspondent. “After the recent events in Norway Sweden’s attitude towards Gennanophile Swedes has changed considerably for the worse,” says the letter. “British and American reports alleging the execution of 200,000 civilians in the occupied territories have strongly influenced Swedish circles. Therefore, it is advisable for you not to give grounds for provoking unpleasantness until further notice.” Berlin radio says that 11 communists from the Bacska district in Hungary were sentenced to death and two to life imprisonment for participating in acts of sabotage and banditry and the use of weapons directed against the public security.
