SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS At the Invercargill tennis courts on Saturday the Southland secondary _ schools’ championships were continued with the opening round of the mixed doubles and the finals of some of the other sections. In the senior boys K. Corkery (Marist), the Southland junior champion, had a long hard game with K. Curran (Marist), winning, in a match of nearly two hours, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Both players drove and placed splendidly, although the winner was inclined to chop too much, thus bringing his opponent on to attack. Curran was the more aggressive, having his rival on the defence much of the time, but found Corkery too steady. M. O’Brien (Marist) became junior boys’ champion by defeating W. McCaw (Marist) 9-4. The loser did not play with his usual dash and allowed his opponent to call the tune.
The final of the senior girls’ doubles was rather one-sided, P. Hardy and H. Fallow (High) defeating T. Stevenson and E. Hulse (High) 9-0. In the mixed doubles good progress was made, the only surprise being the defeat of Walker and Miss Fallow (High) by Cochrane and Miss Fitzgerald (Marist). The games will be concluded next Saturday at the Invercargill courts.
