ARTICLE ON QUEBEC
Magazine Life Criticized
QUEBEC, October 28. The Archbishop of Quebec, Cardinal Roderigo Villeneuve, issued a statement protesting against an article in the magazine Life. The cardinal said he was bound to express absolute reprobation of such a flagrant contempt of the laws of hospitality and the rights of justice and truth.
The article said that, Quebec was philosophically and religiously derived from the Catholicism of the sixteenth century. It despised the France of the French Revolution and now its youth admired the France of Petain. Inter alia, Life said that actually rural Quebec is run by the Catholic Church, which exact a 4 per cent, tithe of all grain harvests. Girls may marry at 14 years of age, but must not go to the movies until they are 16.
