Colonel B. S. Finn, Director of Dental Services, paid a brief visit to Invercargill yesterday and has returned north. Mr J. Philp, superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade, will leave for Wellington by the express this morning. Mr L. C. Vicary, manager of the linen flax factory at Winton, has been advised of his transfer on promotion to Christchurch. He will leave shortly to take up his new duties. The Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., has been appointed a Government representative on the Bluff Harbour Board to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sir Robert Anderson, according to advice received by the board yesterday. Mr Doyle was formerly a member of the board as a representative of the borough of Bluff. The Rev. P. L. A. Crampton, 8.A., the newly-appointed youth director of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, is at present visiting Invercargill. He is accompanied by Mrs Crampton, who is representing the Baptist Women’s Missionary Union. Mr and Mrs H. E. Watson, Clifden, have received cabled advice that their son, Flying Officer R. J. Watson, has finished his operational flying in the Middle East and is returning to England.

Mr Alex. Sutherland received many congratulations from various parts of the Dominion yesterday on completing 39 years as a teacher of dancing. It was his birthday and also marked the end of the 49th year since he appeared in public as a competitive dancer. Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs Price, Waianiwa, that their son, Sergeant Air Gunner Harold Price, is safe and well and has been promoted to flight sergeant after completing operational flights over Germany and occupied territory. He is at present on leave in Scotland. Pilot Officer Randolph C. Smart, who has been reported missing on air operations, is the elder son of Mrs F. J. Smart, Martinborough, and the late Mr G. J. C. Smart, He was born and educated at Wyndham, where his father was for many years a well-known company secretary. He later attended the Southland Boys’ High School and then went to Wellington to join the Public Works Department, where he was employed at the time of his enlistment in the Air Force.
