WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL
Monthly Meeting
The Wallace County Council at Its monthly meeting decided to invest £lO6O in the second Liberty Loan. It was also decided to grant £2/2/- to the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association.
The chairman (Cr E. K. Sim) extended a welcome to Cr F. E. Anderson, successor to Cr A. Gould. Mr Sim said that during the depression the Aparima riding was not in a good position financially, but under Cr Gould’s guidance the position had been reversed and he trusted Cr Anderson would carry on the good work. A letter was received from the Southland County Council advising that the Southland County Council had instructed the Health Department that licences would not be issued for public buildings until after the war, and it was decided to agree to the proposal. The secretary of the New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employees wrote about essential industries, and it was decided to reply that members of the council were not in favour of declaring county work essential.
Cr Pinckney brought up the matter of drainage on the Harbour Board endowment at Riverton. He said that years ago a channel had been put in, but it was not deep or wide enough to carry away the water, thus blocking the outlet for some half-a-dozen settlers. The excavator was in the district at the present time, and if the work was carried out it would be a big improvement and bring in a tremendous area lying idle. He intended to call a meeting of those interested in order to ascertain and apportion the cost. He also intended to interview the Riverton Harbour Board. Immediately the money was paid by the responsible parties the work could be proceeded with.
The secretary of the Aparima Dairy Factory Company wrote applying to have the portion of the county road adjoining the factory frontage laid down with bitumen. It was decided to grant the application. Mr A. W. Rodger, general manager of the Ohai Railway Board, advised that the position of the culvert under the board’s line had been duly marked and pointed out to the Birchwood Coal Company by their ganger. Cr Speight said that the entrance
only was given and not the exit. "Hie Birchwood Coal Company was quite willing to do the work provided this were known. It was decided to ask the Ohai Railway Board to inform the council about the outlet of the culvert.
