CHIMNEY FIRE.—Tlie City Fire Brigade received a call at 7 o’clock last evening to a chimney fire at the residence of Mr J. Hamilton, 233 Bowmont street. No material damage was done. NATIONAL SAVINGS.—Last week 39 new National Savings accounts were opened in Southland, bringing the total for the province to 18,632. The objective is 20,000 accounts for Southland. MANUFACTURERS’ CONFERENCE—The 1942 annual conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation will be held in Christchurch from Tuesday till Thursday next. It will be opened by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. The reports cover a wide range of subjects, but particular consideration will be given to the man-power problems of industry, absenteeism, the supply of raw materials, bulk purchasing and rehabilitation—P.A.
