Major H. R. Gibson, N.Z.M.C., arrived in Invercargill yesterday on furlough. Mr A. J. Hawke, of Gore, was elected to the directorate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sir Robert Anderson at the annual general meeting of the Invercargill Permanent Building Society last night. Mr Eric H. Rhodes has been appointed a director of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Limited, to fill the vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mr C. V. Houghton. A motion of sympathy with the relations of the late Mr H. F. Drewe, one of the directors, was passed at the annual meeting of the Invercargill Permanent Building Society last night. Mr W. R. Newall, Deputy DirectorGeneral of the Post and Telegraph Department, will shortly retire because of loss of eyesight. However, his experience will be available to the department for the duration of the war, as he has agreed to act in an advisory capacity.—P.A.

A motion of sympathy with the relations of Mr C. E. Borne, auditor of the society, was passed at the annual general meeting of the Invercargill Building Society last night. According to a Gazette notice appearing last night the following judges have been appointed members of the first division of the Court of Appeal: Sir Michael Myers, Mr Justice Blair, Mr Justice Kennedy, Mr Justice Callan and Mr Justice Northcroft. The following have been appointed members of the second division: Sir Michael Myers, Mr Justice Blair, Mr Justice Smith, Mr Justice Johnston and Mr Justice Fair.—P.A.
