SERVICE ON HARBOUR BOARD
Tribute To Sir Robert Anderson
A tribute to the long service of Sir Robert Anderson as a member of the Bluff Harbour Board was paid by the chairman (Mr W. J. A. McGregor) at a meeting of the board last night. “Bluff harbour and the business of the board, occupied a very prominent place in his life over a long period of years,” he said. “For an unbroken period of some 41 years he served most worthily on this board as the nominee of various Governments, which shows that his valuable services were recognized by all alike. His fairmindedness, tact and common sense appealed to those of us who so long enjoyed his company on this board. His wellknown ability and the special knowledge he brought to the board table were greatly appreciated by his fellow members and any matter concerning the welfare of the port or the province of Southland had his unqualified and whole-hearted support. In addition to his long membership, he gave signal service as chairman of the board for a period of four years from 1909 to 1913.
“In- his death Southland has lost an honoured son, one who served his day and generation most worthily, and who has left a high example of life young New Zealanders might well follow, a life built upon Christian principles, hard work, perseverance and initiative. These are days when such good men can be ill-spared, and those who are left must step into the gap and carry on, endeavouring to uphold the worthy symbol of life his example has set for us.” A motion of sympathy with Lady Anderson and her family was passed.
