MARRIED WOMAN DROWNED
HUSBAND ALSO FEARED DEAD (P.A.) NELSON, October 28. Mrs Reginald Thurlow, of Longford, Murchison, was drowned in the Buller river this morning, and it is feared that Mr Thurlow also lost his life when the cable anchor of a chain on which they were crossing the river gave way. During the morning, Mr C. Main, a farmer on the Longford side of the river, noticed that the cable anchor had broken and that the chair had fallen into the water. Fearing that an accident had happened when Mr Thurlow was bringing his cream cans across, he telephoned Mr Thurlow’s house, but could get no reply. He immediately investigated and found that Mr Thurlow had brought only one of his usual two cans across the water. Mrs Thurlow’s body was recovered from the water, but no trace was found of Mr Thurlow, and it is feared he was also on the chair when the cable anchor pulled out. It is thought that Mr Thurlow had taken one cream can across and was making a second trip with Mrs Thurlow and the second can when the accident happened. The chair crossed the Buller on a cable about 50 feet above the water from Mr Thurlow’s to Mr Main’s property. MINE OWNER ELECTROCUTED (P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 28. Arthur James Birley, middle-aged, of Mosgiel, owner of the East Taieri Collieries mine, was electrocuted today while installing an electric pump at the mine.
